Spell 11: Originality Is For Suckers! And Order Is For The Weak!
Spell 11:
Originality Is For Suckers!
And Order Is For The Weak!
Originality is a complete illusion! Everything is derivative of something else, if not multiple something elses. Much of what we create bubbles up from the subconscious with exact origins unknown. And we con ourselves into believing that we’re the source, just because we don’t really know the source. The human mind is complex and naturally chaotic, in all of the best possible ways, as well as all of the worst.
But chaos, properly understood, is not randomness. We live in a completely deterministic universe, where nothing is ever truly random, because nothing ever can be. But the determinism of a vast and infinite universe, with an infinite number of factors, results in a deterministic causality of infinite complexity. But the human mind cannot comprehend infinite complexity. We can only comprehend oversimplified observable patterns, in what otherwise appears to be nothing but indeterminate disorder.
Human free will is itself an illusion born of this veil of infinite complexity. Originality is nothing but a vain presumption, born of ignorance of the real causal origins, themselves lost behind the veil of infinite complexity within our own minds, known as the subconscious. But we tend to want to be believe that we are the source regardless, especially if it’s really good. Because all is chaos otherwise. And chaos is scary, and not nearly as flattering as the pretention of originality.
But virtually everything that we create that resonates with our fellow human beings, is made resonant with other human beings, not because we are thinking alike, so much as we share a common deterministic chaos within us, which causes us to think alike to some extent. Chaos is not disorder, but a deeper order, with deeper deterministic causal waves and ripples in the true natural causal order, that break the surface of our subconscious, in order to enter the conscious mind, seemingly appearing out of nowhere, as inspiration, and so-called ‘free’ will.
Whether we realize this or not, much of creativity is just channeling chaos. Virtually all of the best and most legendary musicians channel chaos this way, as they improvise in the moment. And all jazz musicians do this to some extent, as it is mandatory by the definition of the genre. Even those who wish to copy and repeat, can never do so perfectly. Human chaos is inherently self limiting in terms of conscious self control. And any amount of excessive self control, at least partially stifles inspiration, and inhibits the chaotic resonance that makes it more appealing to a human audience. Control freaks tend not to resonate. Chaos will not be denied.
But if the most ‘original’ we can be, or at least appear to be, is a question of channeling chaos as inspiration, then why not complete disorder? Why doesn’t seemingly random noise resonate? Often it does, if it represents a natural organic chaos, like the sounds of the ocean waves crashing on the shore. The natural organic chaos of the patterns of tree growth within just one tree, also resonate visually, as does the entire forest of unique manifestations of the organic chaos of the trees. And they draw many people into the wild for that reason.
But the trees are not truly random in their growth. In order to live, they must conform to certain organic viability parameters, defined by their DNA and the causality of the universe, within which they have chaotic wiggle room, in order to conform to their naturally chaotic environment, and grow wild and pretty. Likewise, music is not, and can never be truly random. Even free form must have some common elements between the musicians. But I never liked that stuff anyway. They’re just trying way too hard. Forced randomness tends to be a negation of what most of us actually want.
Sympathetic resonance is simply like resonates with like, because they work likewise in a similar way. Natural organic human chaos resonates with natural organic human chaos, not a human random noise generator trying desperately to avoid that, as if all forms and appearances of order were somehow problems to be solved, even rhythm and harmony. Some forms and sounds resonate with human beings, and others do not. This is largely a feature of human evolution, a chaotic creature born of chaotic evolution. Human musical forms likewise have evolved to exploit what resonates with our fellow human beings.
All forms of human communication are a feature of sympathetic resonance between mutually chaotic and sympatico humans. Language evolves from sounds that resonate between humans. Gradually they take on a resonant meaning between people as they are used more and more. They gradually develop rules that aide in the resonant communication between them, with meaning resulting from their resonant associations evolving over time. But the language never settles in it’s evolution. It never settles into a final set order, not even temporarily within our own lifetimes.
While the rules are more or less set, or at least slowly evolving, the potential variability of content within those rules for human language, is potentially infinite in it’s totality. And it is infinite piled upon infinite when the evolution of the language itself is considered. But it cannot evolve into just anything. The causality of the universe is not optional. And nothing can survive it, and propagate itself within it, that does not absolutely conform to it, in order to do so.
Infinite variability is an illusion born of infinite complexity, just as chaos is. Friedrich Nietzsche has a concept known as eternal recurrence. Basically, with a finite limit on possible variations of causality and circumstance, eventually all such possibilities will be exhausted, and will then start to repeat the whole process over and over again for all eternity. But contrary to Nietzsche, we live in a vast and infinite universe, with an infinite number of factors and elements, which combine to create infinite variability within deterministic causality, that never can be exhausted, and can never be exactly repeated, for all eternity.
This is an eternal process of chaos, an eternal and infinitely complex deterministic causality, with perpetual rhyming without exact repetition. Because exact repetition is impossible. This is what is known as deterministic chaos. We are not separate and apart from this process. We are a process of living deterministic chaos. And all of our art, music, and even our technology, are mere products of our own living chaos, living and producing within deterministic chaos.
All genuine human creativity is a product of the chaotic interaction between the chaos within human nature, and the chaos of circumstances all around us, not just other people. It is a dynamic of chaos within versus chaos without. It is chaos nature versus chaos nurture, which is also a part of chaos nature. Inspiration is nothing but a cover story for chaos. And originality is nothing but a vain conceit. Artist, creators, and innovators, often seek out that seemingly magical inspiration. But inspiration cannot be forced. Because it’s not even really up to us to begin with. We are only different channels for the processes of chaos.
But chaos is scary. Because it defies control. Excessively and rigidly clinging to the illusion of what most people think of as order, destroys any possibility of genuine inspiration. The truly great creators among us know to let go to some extent, but never completely. They know to follow their own nature and feelings, without too much conscious control or thought. Musicians improvise in the moment, having previously mastered their instrument, the key in question, and the particulars of the song to be played. All of this is required before they can let go and follow their feelings in the moment, within the parameters of the song. But the fear of failure inhibits this process. Chaos scary!
Inspiration is not for the fearful or weak of heart. Inspiration is just channeling chaos. And surrendering to chaos is not so easy, not even in the moment, but even less so if you have more time to think about it. Most good music is a product resonant improvisation within the moment. Any conversation is essentially improvised composition, with much less in the way of time pressure for the sake of the performance compared to music. And they have far more time to overthink things, and with a lot more to consider potentially, depending on the conversation.
As a writer of fiction, the danger to overthink things is far greater still, with far more to consider for the long term, given that there will be a written record of it if you screw up. But the process is still essentially the same regardless. We may wish to devise plots to organize and control the process. But no one can come up with a perfect plot that would perfectly resonate with one’s audience. Any artificial plot is essentially a sequence of causality, in whatever order the story is told. And people will instinctively doubt and disregard a story with a plot that doesn’t jive with their expectations of how things really work, regardless of how they want to believe they work. Because the expectations themselves are partly a product of chaotic evolution of the human brain, within the process of deterministic chaos.
So not just any plot will do. It’s been repeatedly said that there are only just so many stories, and they’re just told over and over again in different forms, variations, and the combinations thereof. This is partly because only stories that jive with the causality of the universe, will resonate with an audience of people evolved within that same process, because it’s hard wired into our brains by evolution, as a shortcut to thinking that may take too much time in a pressing survival situation.
But recycling the same old plots over and over again is boring. Only natural chaos can be relied upon to spice things up. That is why I adopted an approach of applied chaos theory to my own fiction writing. I often joke to myself that I lost the plot on purpose, because I didn’t want it to begin with. Plot? We don’t need no stinkin plot! Plots are for the weak. Chaos is for the strong. Even in my non fiction writing, I don’t necessarily have much in the way of a preconceived conclusion, so much as a general topic and related topics, and variety of understandings and notions, where I don’t necessarily know ahead of time how it will turn out, or what exactly will make the final cut. Can you tell?
My writing process is essentially a part of, and a product of, my thinking process. Which as a human being, is essentially evolved deterministic chaos. I admittedly take a few shortcuts by writing fan fiction, where most of the hard work is already done for you. But there is nothing wrong or illegitimate about doing so, given the nature of story telling as already explained. People shy away from this, or even coming to close to it, because of a stigma of being ‘derivative’, or even a ‘thief’, as if it could be completely avoided. All that matters is whether the story resonates with it’s audience, and whether or not you bring anything interesting to the mix, vain pretentions to the contrary not withstanding.
I find that surrendering the pretense of originality, allows me to write in a way that I might refrain from doing otherwise. And we all have to start somewhere. And who can really start completely from scratch anyway, if you don’t start with something easier to begin with. And nothing can ever really be completely from scratch anyway. The vain pretension of originality is just a high minded impediment to creation. It is a preconceived notion of what is allowed versus what is not, preemptively aborting the creation before it can begin, a preemptive abortion of inspiration for the sake of vanity, along with so-called intellectual property.
Intellectual property masquerades as a reward and incentivization of innovation and creativity. But it is only a means of control, with the vain pretension of originality as cover and excuse. Ownership is control. And control is ownership. And property rights are about nothing but control. Intellectual property rights are nothing but a vain effort to control the products of inspiration, to monopolize there bits and pieces, and restrict the creation of anything that’s too close to what they own and control.
More and more this is used as a means of censorship, by warping and twisting the products of inspiration that they control, and restricting anything too close to it, that doesn’t serve the interests of their control. Monetizing this IP extortion racket funds an army of lawyers to wage lawfair to defend their racket. And the control freaks just have to squash the competition that might otherwise represent a relatively genuine inspiration, that is contrary to the program of control. The very notion of originality is just a product of the manipulation by these control freaks, who feel compelled to destroy anything they do not control, regardless of the resonant or inspirational value.
Control freaks believe in the illusion of order, no matter the cost for the illusion. And they fear chaos, out of a deep seated and incorrigible insecurity. But no matter how big and powerful you are, the universe is always bigger and more powerful than you, and any army that can be raised by you. And the causality of the universe is not optional, no exceptions, no excuses, no bµ11$hit! If you care for your own inspiration, then ignore all noise to the contrary from parasite IP lawyers with a complaint. Embrace inspiration, and surrender to chaos, and fight back all of the control freak lawyers that may get in your way.
